A 38-year-old construction worker was killed by a co-worker who hammered him in the head the other night on President  Quirino Avenue in Malate, Manila. The two reportedly share a common love interest.

Victim Rolando Elago, with no permanent address, died hours after being rushed to the nearest hospital while the suspect, Demy Montes, remains in hiding.

Their bone of contention, identified as Annalyn Cabatingan, 33, told the police that the incident took place at around 9 p.m. while she was cooking rice.

Cabatingan, investigation showed, was Elago’s partner. She then split with Elago and lived with Montes for six months. When her relationship with Montes did not work, she went back to Elago and the two have been live-in partners for six months now.

According to her, the suspect confronted the victim upon seeing that the couple was using his pot in cooking rice.

A heated exchange took place until the suspect tried to hit Cabatingan’s head with a hammer. The victim interceded and was instead hit.

Cabatingan told police that she and the suspect split up because the latter often harmed her.
