CAMP FLORENDO, La Union (UPDATE) – The provincial fire marshall of Ilocos Sur was shot dead by his own subordinate while inside his office Tuesday evening in Vigan City, police said.
Ilocos Sur police director Senior Superintendent Eduardo Angel Dopale identified the victim as Fire Supt. Ruben Pascua, 54, a resident of Dela Cuesta Subdivision, Caloocan City.
Police said Pascua had just finished dinner and was resting inside his office at the fire station in Jose Singson Street when the suspect, Senior Inspector Rey Monico Acena, arrived at around 9 p.m. aboard a motorcycle.
Acena then barged inside Pascua’s office and shot his superior official using a caliber 45 pistol.
Witnesses said Acena, who is Bantay municipality’s fire chief, was seen walking out of the crime scene and escaped towards unknown direction.
The victim was brought to Lahoz Hospital for treatment but was declared dead on arrival due to gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
Police recovered from the crime scene a caliber 45 pistol with seven live bullets.
Policemen have conducted a manhunt operation against the suspect.
Investigators have yet to determine if the killing was motivated by a personal grudge or if it was work-related.
Chief Superintendent Orlando Mabutas, Region 1 police director, directed Dopale to conduct an in-depth investigation on the incident. With reports from Randy Menor, ABS-CBN Ilocos; and Arnell Ozaeta, ABS-CBN News
