LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte, Philippines—A councilor of Currimao, Ilocos Norte was gunned down by two men inside the family-owned grocery in the town center Sunday afternoon, police said.

Superintendent Bienvenido Rayco, Ilocos Norte deputy police director, said Councilor Estela Vidad, who was manning the grocery’s cash register, was shot twice with a 9mm pistol.

Vidad died while undergoing treatment at the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center in nearby Batac town.

Rayco said the unidentified assailants fled on foot after the attack at 2:30 p.m.

Police could not say if the attack was related to politics or the village elections.
