MANILA, Philippines — The head teacher of a school in Sultan Mastura, Maguindanao who was also a member of the municipal board of canvassers for the May 13 elections was gunned down Wednesday morning.
Sultan Mastura police chief Inspector Esmael Madin said Loreto Taja-on, 52, was shot through the left eye with a .45 caliber pistol by one of two men riding a motorcycle past 6 a.m.
The victim was declared dead on arrival at the hospital he was rushed to.
Although investigators have yet to establish the motive for the killing, they are not discounting the possibility it is linked to Monday’s elections.
Sultan Mastura has been placed on the Comelec’s list of areas of immediate concern in Maguindanao.
Meanwhile, in the provincial capital of Shariff Aguak, Gardo Tamondo, 19, was wounded in a grenade explosion in front of the home of Mayor Bai Zahara Ampatuan past 9 p.m. Tuesday.
