Gunmen kill town councilor in Lanao

COTABATO, Philippines (Xinhua) – Suspected Muslim rebels in southern Philippines killed a town councilor on Thursday, local police said.
The victim, councilor Subair Tawantawan of Salvador town in Lanao del Norte, was heading to his office on board a motorbike when he was attacked by three men armed with high-powered weapons, said regional police commander Chief Superintendent Bienvenido Latag.
The perpetrators hurriedly left the scene after confirming their target killed.
Latag blamed rebels of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front engaged in peace talks with Manila for the killing, citing the victim recently tipped off the military over the whereabouts of eight rebels that led to their arrest.
