LEGASPI City: Gunmen shot dead three people, including a village councilman running for re-election and his wife, in an attack in the eastern Philippines on Monday, the local police chief said.
Senior Supt. Ruffy Bausa said officers were investigating whether the killing was politically motivated, noting that councilman Wilredo Lotino, 50, was expected to run for re-election in two weeks’ time.

The third victim was visiting Lotino.

Local elections in the Philippines are often marred by violence, with politicians mostly targeting rivals or election officials.

At least 28 people were killed this year in violence related to the presidential and congressional elections held in May.

This does not include the 57 people allegedly killed by a powerful political clan in the southern Philippines in November last year, in the country’s worst case of election-related violence in memory.
