Pagadian City: Unidentified gunmen killed an army intelligence specialist and wounded his companion in an attack Sunday in the restive province of Basilan, officials over the weekend reported.
Authorities said that the two soldiers, who belong to the 32nd Infantry Battalion, were shot in Ubit village in Lamitan City.
The wounded soldier remains to be in critical condition.
“The attack killed one of our soldiers,” Brig. Gen. Daniel Lucero, commander of the 1st Infantry Division, confirmed.
The military did not release the names of the victims, saying that their families have not been informed about the attack.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the extremist Abu Sayyaf Group is actively operating in Basilan, one of five provinces under the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
