MOTORCYCLE-RIDING assassins shot dead an elder brother of Supt. Hansel Marantan in Lemery, Batangas Sunday morning. Ariel Marantan, a 47-year-old engineer suffered seven gunshot wounds in the body and died on the spot. He was visiting his farm in Bgy. Talaga in Lemery when the motorbike-riding suspects pulled over and shot him without any provocation around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Witnesses said the assassins wore bonnets to cover their faces.
A grieving Supt. Marantan, now being held under restriction at Camp Crame in connection with the controversial killing of 13 armed men in Atimonan, Quezon last Jan. 6, said his brother has no known enemies.
Reports showed the victim bought a small mango farm in Talaga which he developed.
Journal Group sources said the victim had made it a habit to visit his farm every weekend. Police are checking reports that some persons harbored a grudge against the victim when he bought and developed the small mango farm in Lemery and later refused to sell it.
The victim is a low-profile engineer who distanced himself from the media after his brother and his men were ordered investigated for the death of 13 armed men in Atimonan, Quezon. Alfred Dalizon
