MANILA, Philippines – Two unidentified gunmen killed a former town mayor of Giporlos town, Eastern Samar province, Tuesday afternoon.

The victim was identified as Mateo Biong, former mayor of Giporlos town. He was rushed to the Balangiga District Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival due to fatal gunshot wounds in the head.

Police said the incident happened shortly before 4 p.m. at the motorpool owned by the victim in Barangay Coticot.

After the incident, the suspects fled towards Barangay Sta. Cruz.

Chief Inspector Virgilio Plaza, town police chief, said they are discounting the possibility that politics was the motive behind the killing.

Plaza said members of the New People’s Army’s hit squad could be involved in the crime.

Biong ran but lost in the congressional race in the lone district of Eastern Samar in the May 2010 polls.
