AN unidentified gunman shot dead a barangay councilman and a part-time radio broadcaster in Tagum City in Davao del Norte early morning yesterday, just hours after another radioman in Iloilo City was shot and wounded in another gun attack.
Rogelio ‘Tata’ Bucalid, 42, blocktime commentator for Radyo Natin in Tagum City, died after being shot in the body on Sobrecaray Street at 9 a.m.
In Iloilo City, Jonavin Villalba, 43, a reporter of dyOK Aksiyon Radyo, was shot by one of two motorcycle-riding men as he was opening the gate of his house in Jaro area past 11 p.m. Tuesday. He suffered gunshot wounds to the right ankle and left foot.
The Police Regional Office 11 headed by Chief Supt. Wency Pascual is still investigating the motive and identity of the killer of Bucalid, the second radioman to be murdered in Mindanao since last Nov. 29. The PRO6 headed by Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr. is also investigating the motive and identities of the motorcycle-riding men who attacked Villalba.
Last Nov. 29, a gunman killed Joas Dignos in Valencia, Bukidnon while Michael Milo was shot in Tandag, Surigao del Sur last Dec. 9.
The case of Bucalid, a councilman of Bgy. Mankilam, Tagum City, is still under probe as of press time amid initial reports that he has been airing the feud between two groups fighting control over the Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative before he was killed.
Villalba, on the other hand, was shot in front of his house in Iloilo City, according to Iloilo City police chief Senior Supt. Ruperto Floro. Witnesses rushed the victim to a local hospital where he is now in stable condition.
Investigation showed the victim was opening the gate of his house in Bgy. Cuartero when he was shot by the gunman who, along with the motorcycle driver, was wearing helmet. Responding policemen recovered nine spent cartridges for 9mm at the scene.
The killing of Bucalid came in the wake of an outcry from the National Journalists Union of the Philippines over the Aquino government’s alleged failure to stop attacks on members of the Philippine press.
