LUCENA CITY, Philippines—A policeman was shot dead by an unidentified assailant at a cockpit arena in Candelaria, Quezon shortly before midnight Monday, police said Tuesday.

A report from Candelaria police station identified the victim as Senior Police Officer 2 Federico Alvarez, an “intelligence agent” from the said station.

Report said that around 11:20 p.m., as Alvarez was about to exit his car in the dimly-lit parking area of the LDB Sports Arena in Barangay Mangilag Sur, the gunman suddenly appeared and repeatedly shot him with a .45 cal. pistol

The unidentified gunman fled on a waiting motorcycle driven by a cohort, and sped off toward nearby town of Sariaya.

The bloodied cop was rushed to a local hospital then transferred to another hospital in Lucena City, but died while undergoing treatment, report said.

Police investigators recovered seven empty shells and two slugs from the crime scene.

Report said the slain lawman was at the cockpit arena searching for a man long

wanted for arrest.
