Police are investigating the discovery of a grenade outside the office of District 1 Congresswoman Beng Climaco in Sta. Maria last Wednesday.
Sta. Maria Police Station commander Chief Insp. Felix Martinez disclosed that he and his men were gathering information and trying to determine whether or not the grenade was intentionally planted or was accidentally disposed or left behind.
Martinez said a staff member of Congresswoman Climaco called up about 3:25 p.m. Wednesday and reported the discovery of a grenade outside the legislator’s office in front of the Edwin Andrews Air Base.
Martinez said that some of Climaco’s personnel were digging a hole when they found a hard object that looked like an explosive.
During ocular investigation conducted by the Sta. Maria police and Bomb Squad, the object turned out to be an MK3 fragmentation grenade. It was taken to the Bomb Squad office for proper disposition.
Police were looking into two angles: The explosive might have been planted intentionally or it could have been abandoned or thrown by an unidentified man.
In May 2, 2008, three people were killed and 20 were injured when a powerful bomb exploded near Climaco’s office.
