MANILA, Philippines—A German tourist lost close to P40,000 worth of belongings to two men, one of whom introduced himself as a policeman and offered to help her find her way around Manila.

Stefanie Sixdorf, 23, temporarily staying at a hotelalong A. Mabini St. in Ermita, was overwhelmed by the “kindness” of strangers but later found herself being robbed at knife-point by the “helpful” men.

The German tourist lodged a complaint Sunday afternoon before the Manila Police District General Assignment Section (MPD-GAS) claiming that the robbers took her P7,000 cash and her backpack containing a digital camera, a mobile phone, an MP3 player, her hiking boots as well as other personal belongings. She estimated the stolen items to be worth US$ 600.

In her complaint, Sixdorf said that she was walking along A. Mabini St. in Ermita at around 8 p.m. Saturday and was studying a map of the city when a man got off a black car with tinted windows and offered to help her with directions.

The man’s helpfulness reportedly convinced her to accept his invitation to ride in his car. While she sat in the front passenger seat, the driver of the car introduced himself as a policeman and even allegedly showed Philippine National Police identification cards. The other man, who initially helped her, sat in the back seat.

As soon as the car moved along Mabini St., the man in the back seat suddenly poked a knife at the woman demanding her money and belongings. As soon as she handed them over, she was ordered to get off. The robbers then fled with their loot.

Operatives of the MPD-GAS are conducting follow-up operations for the identification and arrest of the suspects, as well as the possible recovery of the stolen items.
