An alleged gang leader was killed and two bystanders were wounded while they were sleeping outside the chapel in barangay Subangdaku, Mandue City.
The fatality was identified as Romeo “Ron-ron” Villaflor Jr., 19 and alleged leader of the Bloods gang.
Insp. Alexander Nuñez, Subangdaku deputy police chief, said the assailants were believed to be members of the rival Crips gang.
The police said the attack may be in retaliation to the killing of Crips members by a Bloods member last month.
Villaflor was sleeping on a foam bed outside a chapel when eight men arrived and shot him several times around 2 a.m.
Two men, who were sleeping a few meters from Villaflor were also shot.
Renante Cabig, 29, and Jomar Dizon, 25, stood up when they heard the gunfire but the perpetrators fired at them. It was not known if the two were also Bloods members.
The assailants fled after the shooting.
The three victims were brought to Mandaue City District Hospital.
But Villaflor was declared dead on arrival by physicians.
Police said witnesses identified some of the assailants as Mark Anthony Abad and a certain “Aloy,” both alleged Crips members.
The police were conduting operation to arrest the perpetrators and put them behind bars.
