BACOLOD CITY – Several businessmen have received letters purportedly sent by communist rebels and demanding payment of “revolutionary tax.”

A source furnished the Philippine Daily Inquirer a copy of the letters sent by the New People’s Army (NPA) Boy Gatmaitan Command, asking that his name and those of the recipients be withheld. “As you can understand, all parties are apprehensive over their security on this,” the source said.

“From the format, everyone I talked to who were once involved with the Maoist movement agree that this extortion letter is the real deal,” he added.

The demand letters bear the logo of the NPA and the name of its unit, and signed by one Ka Armando Magbanua of the regional taxation team of the National Democratic Front-Negros.

The letters served as an invitation to the businessmen for possible negotiation regarding their “tax obligations.”

“We are aware of the existence of your business operation and assets in the area covered by the authority of the People’s Revolutionary Government based in the countryside. In this light the revolutionary government is exercising its right to demand from you a certain amount of tax which we determine based on our investigation,” the letter stated. Carla P.
