MANILA, Philippines – A former barangay councilman planning to seek re-election in the October 25 barangay elections was shot dead in Candelaria town, Quezon province on Wednesday night.

Police said Aquilino Gutierrez had just arrived at the home of his friend, Mamerto Briones, in Barangay Malabanan Sur, around 6:25 p.m. when a lone gunman shot him.

Another former councilor, Regalado Diaz, who was with Gutierrez and Briones caught a stray bullet in the face. Diaz has been rushed to a hospital.

Briones told ABS-CBN Southern Tagalog that they were supposed to discuss their campaign plan for the coming barangay elections.

Police said that according to witnesses, the shooter was wearing shorts, a brown jacket and a hat. They said several witnesses saw the gunman casually walking away from Briones’s home after shooting Gutierrez.
