LAMITAN CITY, Basilan – Four Liberal Party (LP) coordinators were wounded in an explosion Sunday night in Lamitan City, the police said.
The incident took place around 10 p.m. Sunday at the residence of Mayor Roderick Furigay in Barangay Malinis here.
Furigay, who is in his last term of office, is seeking election as vice mayor under the LP banner.
Chief Insp. Almer Ismael, local police chief, said Furigay was having a meeting with his political coordinators when an unidentified man tossed an improvised explosive device (IED).
Ismael identified the wounded as Melvin Tinguha, 22; Jay Ferrer, 29; Christopher Umbac, 30; and Joemar Ignacion, 20.
“The target of the suspect is our campaign headquarters but the IED fell outside the fence of our residence after it hit a tarpaulin,” Furigay said.

“We were having a coordinators’ meeting and there were almost 200 coordinators around,” Furigay added.
The LP headquarters is located on a lot adjacent to the Furigay residence in Barangay Malinis.
The mayor said no one was able to recognize the suspect since there was a brownout at the time of the incident. He said the incident would not stop them from campaigning.
Ismael said they are thoroughly investigating the case to unmask the suspect.
