A member of the board of election inspectors was shot dead in Basilan on Election Day, an election officer said.

Regional election officer Rey Sumplipao confirmed the incident to the Commission on Elections Education and Information Department assistant director Maria Victoria Dulcero.

Dulcero said the victim was not immediately identified.

Earlier, unidentified men tried to snatch a precinct optical scan (PCOS) machine in Sumisip town at around 10:30 a.m.

The incident happened in Barangay Buli-Buli, but Senior Supt. Mario Dapilloza, PNP provincial director, said police and military forces were able to recover the machine, which was abandoned by the suspects as they were cornered.

“They took the PCOS while election officials were unloading the election materials,” said Dapilloza.

He said in Mohammad Ajul, another group of men snatched several election paraphernalia at about 1 p.m. in the town proper. — Marc Jayson Cayabyab /LBG, GMA News
