CABANATUAN City – A local trader who will run for barangay chairman in next month’s barangay elections cheated death when two motorcycle-riding men peppered him with bullets in a botched ambush try Wednesday.
Nueva Ecija police director Senior Supt. Roberto L. Aliggayu identified the businessman as Fernando Pangilinan, 54, of Barangay San Josef Sur, this city.
Pangilinan was rushed to a nearby hospital. City police chief Supt. Eliseo D. Cruz said the attack occurred at 7:50 a.m. in Purok 3, Barangay San Josef Sur.
During follow-up operations, police arrested one of the suspects, Joey San Gabriel, 38, of Purok 5, Barangay Talipapa.
San Gabriel is an alleged member of the notorious “Martinez Group,” said to be involved in several “gun for hire” activities in Nueva Ecija and nearby areas.
Cruz said a frustrated murder case was slapped against the suspect while his cohort, Esteban delos Santos, of Barangay Polilio, remains at large.
The victim was talking with a neighbor outside his house when the suspects stopped near them. One of the gunmen shot him several times. Although wounded, he was able to run for cover.
Cruz said politics could be the motive for the failed ambush try since the victim had earlier declared his intention to run for barangay captain next month.
