BUENAVISTA, Quezon — An arrested drug suspect, who was being escorted to hospital, died after he allegedly grabbed the service pistol of the town’s police chief which went off, hitting him in the jaw in Bgy. De la Paz Saturday.

Quezon police director Senior Supt. Dionardo Carlos identified the slain suspect as Emelito Becenio, alias Totoy Bansot, 44, of Bgy. Poblacion, Guinayangan town.

Public Information Officer Chief Insp. Edcille Canals said prior to the incident, Becenio, a suspected notorious drug pusher in the town, was arrested in a dragnet operation by the local policemen led by the town police commander, Insp. Nimrod Balgemino, at around 2 p.m. based on information earlier provided by police informants.

Canals said the suspect yielded a cal. .22 revolver with live bullets and plastic packets containing Php10,000 worth of suspected shabu.

He said Becenio was brought to the police station for investigation.

After almost two hours, Canals said the policemen handcuffed Becenio and escorted him to the hospital for medical examination as part of the police’ standard operating procedure on arrested suspects.

He said after noticing that the policeman was sleepy due to overfatigue, Balgemino took the wheel and drove the patrol car.

While the group was on its way to the hospital at around 5 p.m., the suspect managed to unlock the handcuff and grabbed Balgemino’s holstered 9mm pistol.

The gun went off, hitting the car’s ceiling before the two surprised cops flanking him made their move.

Canals said Balgemino quickly pulled the car over while his men tried to grab the pistol from the suspect.

But during the scuffle, Canals said the gun went off again hitting the suspect in the right lower jaw. The bullet went through the suspect’s head and hit the ceiling.

In a phone interview, Balgemino said the suspect was declared dead on arrial at Magsaysay District Hospital.

To avoid suspicion of foul play, Balgemino said they quickly proceeded to the Provincial Crime Laboratory Office with the suspect’s body and voluntarily submitted themselves to forensic examination.
