MANILA, Philippines—A middle-aged driver who tried to play peacemaker between his warring neighbors ended up dead on Christmas Day after one of them shot him.
Police said the victim was Frederic Gana, 45, a resident of Marcel Drive in Sangandaan, Quezon City.
Case investigator Police Officer 3 Gregorio Maramag of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said Gana was shot for trying to intervene in an argument between his neighbors.
The man who shot him was identified as Jonathan Geronimo.
Just before the shooting, Geronimo was having a heated argument with two unidentified men inside the Marcel Compound at around 9:45 a.m. on December 25.
Initial investigation showed that because of the noise the three were making, other residents in the compound called on their other neighbors to help pacify the quarreling parties.
Gana, accompanied with his brothers, Jose Elmer and Serwin, later arrived at the scene and tried to calm down Geronimo and the men he was arguing with.
Geronimo, however, vented his ire on Gana. He pulled out a gun and shot the victim repeatedly, hitting him in the chest and in the face.
Geronimo and the two men he was quarreling with immediately fled afterward.
Bystanders rushed the victim to a nearby hospital but he died before he could be treated by a doctor.
Police said they were looking for Geronimo and his two companions to make them answer for the shooting incident.
