A University of the Philippines Diliman professor was robbed and taken for a ride in her own vehicle by the suspects within the university’s sprawling campus last week.
Prof. Perlita Frago, the victim, said the incident occurred at 4:30 p.m. last Wednesday at the parking lot in front of Palma Hall. She said the suspects handcuffed and gagged her and made her kneel down behind the passenger’s seat to conceal her.
“Nakita ko parang madami sila… mga tatlo. May nagtaklob sa ulo ko, may nagtatali sa bibig ko. Nilagyan ako ng posas, sa kamay saka dun sa paa,” the political science professor told GMA News.
Frago said the suspects boarded her car and drove around to find an ATM machine where she could withdraw. She said she was forced to give her PIN to the suspects.
“Kasi naisip ko naman ‘nun, kung magsisinungaling ako sa PIN, kasama ako, nakatali ako,” she said.
The suspects were able to withdraw P29,000 from Frago’s ATM. Her iPhone and jewelry were also taken.
Frago was dropped off at the same parking lot at 5 p.m., merely half and hour after she was taken. She recalled hearing the men plot to drop her off somewhere in Cavite or Tagaytay.
The robbery was the third crime incident reported within the UPD vicinity this year. Just last July, alady guard was almost raped at her post in the Sampaguita Residence Hall by a construction worker. In January, a pillbox exploded at Palma Hall and injured workers who were digging space for a new streetlamp.
These incidents occurred despite the new security measures enforced by the UPD in 2012, following the stabbing of a student inside Vinzons Hall by robbers disguised as tattoo artists.
In a statement released by the Office of the Chancellor in March 2012, new security service contracts were signed, and the increased budget of the UPD Police secured automatic bar gates and high-resolution CCTV cameras to aid officers monitor crucial areas and checkpoints inside the university.
The statement also noted that a comprehensive risk response and disaster management system was being readied, along with the enhancement of UPD Police mobility through new cars and motorcycles.— Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
