A COUPLE was snatched by armed men in Iligan City a little past noon on Sunday, the PNP reported yesterday.

A belated report to Camp Crame said victims Farouk Olama Ampaso and his wife Sumaya, both residents of Barangay Zuares in Iligan City, were forced by armed men led by a certain Allan and one Paroc inside a waiting vehicle at the vicinity of Quezon avenue and Aguinaldo street.

The suspects reportedly headed toward Barangay Tuca in Marawi City. Police are still investigating the incident.

In Sulu, police yesterday clarified that the Japanese kidnap victim earlier identified as Amer Katayama Mamaito is actually Toshio Ito. Police said Ito had assumed a different name to throw off authorities as he has a pending arrest warrant for a crime committed in Plaridel, Misamis Occidental in October 2005.

The Sulu Provincial Police Office had conferred with the chief consul of the Japanese embassy in Manila and found Mamaito’s real name, photograph and passport number (MZ 6055066) issued on Jan. 31, 2000.

Ito’s arrest warrant is connected to a case of trespassing and physical injuries. He was kidnapped last July 16 in Sitio Bas, Barangay Bangkilay, Pangaturan, Sulu by some 10 armed men while reportedly on a treasure hunting expedition in the area.

Ito had been living in Pangaturan for six years and had put up a pharmacy there. – Raymond Africa
