MANILA, Philippines—A shootout occurred Tuesday afternoon in the upscale Valle Verde II subdivision in Pasig City between armed criminals and a team of operatives from the Police Anti-Crime Emergency Response (PACER) in what police described as a botched kidnapping attempt.

One of the alleged kidnappers was shot and rushed to an unspecified hospital, while another was captured and held in PACER custody. Another man on a motorcycle suspected to be part of the group managed to escape, the police said. The suspects’ names were not immediately available.

Chief Superintendent Francisco Manalo, chief of the Eastern Police District, said the shootout happened at a little before 6 p.m. inside the subdivision.

He said the intended victim, a female resident, had complained to PACER about an extortion attempt by the suspects and their threat to abduct her if she failed to come up with the “big amount” they were demanding.

Manalo said this prompted PACER to put the prospective victim’s house under surveillance and to monitor her activities to thwart the kidnapping attempt.

The official said no one from the police was wounded during the gunfight.
