A policeman accidentally shot and wounded a pedestrian in a shootout with suspected robbers in downtown Cebu City on Tuesday night.
PO1 William Cordova, who is assigned in Oslob town, southern Cebu, was pursuing three robbers when he accidentally shot Alfredo Carsa, 48.
The policeman was on board a jeepney when three male passengers declared a holdup.
After taking the passengers’ belongings, the robbers got off the jeepney.
The policeman disembarked from the jeepney and chased the robbers.
Police said the robbers shot at the policeman.
Law enforcers fired back but hit Carsa in the arm instead. The chase was stopped.
The policeman brought Carsa, a resident of barangay Tabok, Mandaue City, to a hospital.
Senior Supt. Erson Digal, Cebu provincial police chief, said the Cebu Provincial Police Office would help pay the hospital bills.
The wounding of a civilian was an offshoot of a legitimate police operation, he said.Digal said his men were trained to shoot but were unfamiliar with moving targets.
Carsa did not press charges.
