MANILA, Philippines—A mob of angry residents lynched one of three robbers who stabbed and divested a laborer of his cell phone early Saturday in Quezon City, police said.

Police identified the slain man as Richard Reyes, a resident of Kalayaan Street in Barangay Batasan Hills, who was dead on arrival at the East Avenue Medical Center where he and robbery victim, John Francis Raymundo, 26, were rushed.

Case investigator Senior Police Officer 1 Florencio Escobido of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said Reyes died of injuries inflicted by angry residents who pounced on him when Raymundo shouted for help.

Reyes’ accomplices—John Tolero, 21, and Darwin Valdez, 20—were arrested by police in follow-up operations.

Escobido said Reyes was reported to be a member of the Sigue Sigue Sputnik Gang while Tolero and Valdez were freed from the Quezon City Jail last month.

Initial investigation showed that Raymundo, a laborer, was walking on Mahubay Street at Freedom Park I in Barangay Batasan Hills at around 12:30 a.m. Saturday after stopping by a store for a cigarette when the three robbers suddenly accosted him, demanding his cellphone while threatening him at knife point.

However, Raymundo refused, causing the robbers to stab him thrice in the thigh before slashing his clutchbag and seizing his cellphone.

Incensed, the victim tried to grab one of the bladed weapons but got hold of Reyes instead and shouted for help.

Angry residents led by Raymundo’s cousin, Paul Mart Bautista, pounced on Reyes and beat him up, Escobido said.

Both Reyes and Raymundo were rushed to the EAMC, where Reyes was declared dead on arrival at 1:55 a.m. Saturday. Raymundo was recuperating in the hospital.

Reyes’ accomplices managed to escape from the mob but were eventually arrested in follow up operations.

Escobido said the two suspects are now in police custody awaiting the filing of robbery charges against them.
