CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna — A driver and close-in bodyguard of a mayoral candidate in Tanza, Cavite, was shot dead just before the start of his boss’ miting de avance Sunday evening, the police on Monday said.

The victim identified as Gilberto Hayayhay, 46, sustained three gunshot wounds in the body after an unidentified gunman shot him at around 9:46 p.m. in Barangay (village) Paradahan, said Superintendent Miguelito Descalzo, Tanza police chief, by phone.

Hayayhay was a driver and bodyguard of Simon Matro, a candidate for mayor of Tanza under the Lakas-Kampi-CMD.

The victim allegedly pulled out from the crowd to buy soda when the gunman shot him at close range.

Police, however, was quick to dismiss links to the forthcoming elections.

“It could be out of a personal grudge. And perhaps he was shot at this time to make it appear election-related,” Descalzo said, and noted that investigation is underway.

He said Hayayhay was involved in a murder case in November 2007, also in Tanza.
