MANILA — A nephew of a vice mayoral candidate in Bacoor, Cavite is in critical condition after he was shot by a group of men in Barangay Aniban before dawn on Tuesday.

Bacoor police chief Col. Ronaldo Mendoza identified the victim as Ferdinand Malvar, nephew of incumbent board member and vice mayoral bet Edwin Malvar.

Initial investigation showed that Ferdinand, who was on board his vehicle, confronted a group of men who were vandalizing and tearing down the campaign posters of his uncle and other local candidates under the Liberal Party.

The victim then went to a police precinct to report the incident. While on his way home at around 2 a.m., the group of men he confronted suddenly fired shots at his vehicle.

Ferdinand was shot in the stomach.

The Malvar family refused to comment as to who they thought were behind the shooting and the vandalism.

Authorities said three suspects are now under police custody.

Vandalized and torn posters of Liberal Party candidates were also found in other barangays.

Many of Edwin’s campaign posters were splattered with red paint. Posters of Ayong Maliksi, Jay Lacson and Jessie Castillo were also crossed out with the same red paint. — Reports from Chiara Zambrano, ABS-CBN News; Eric Dastas and Edwin Sevidal, dzMM
