A teenage Canadian tourist lost P500,000 in cash, an undetermined amount of jewelry and personal belongings to five men who held her up before dawn on Tuesday in front of a church in Manila.
Kim Chua, 18, who said she was a nurse, filed a robbery complaint in the Manila Police District General Assignment Section (MPD-GAS).
Dawn encounter
She said the robbery took place at around 2 a.m. Tuesday in front of the Malate Church along A. Mabini Street in Malate.
While walking along A. Mabini Street with her luggage and brief case, five men approached her, Chua said.
Two of the men positioned themselves behind her, took out a gun and a knife, and declared a holdup.
Lookouts
The three other suspects served as lookouts, she added.
The robbers took her brief case holding P500,000 in cash and her Canadian passport, as well as herluggage that contained jewelry, clothes and her mobile phone before fleeing.
Roving patrol
Chua immediately flagged down a roving patrol car of the MPD District Mobile Patrol Unit (DMPU) that passed by minutes after the robbery.
The police tried to track down the suspects but they had already disappeared.
During the investigation, Chua claimed the cash had been sent to her by her father so she could put up a business in the country.
Chua was brought by the DMPU operatives to the MPD-GAS to file a complaint and was advised to contact the Canadian Embassy.
Follow up
Operatives of the MPD-GAS are conducting follow-up operations for the suspects’ arrest as well as the possible recovery of the stolen items.
