COTABATO CITY, Philippines—A suspected bomber and an Army soldier were killed in a noontime shootout in nearby Sultan Kudarat town in Maguindanao Thursday, the police said.

The shooting that killed Edris Sabal, accused in a double murder case and illegal possession of explosives, and Army Sgt. Romy Apostol of Task Group Tugis, happened at around 12:15 p.m. at a quarry site of Barangay Simuay, said the city police director, Senior Supt. Willie Dangane.

Dangane said Sabal’s wife Guia Kasim Mamalimping and PO1 Manuelito Lesmoras of the city police office were injured.

Dangane said joint police-military operatives had been formed after a weeklong surveillance confirmed the presence in Sultan Kudarat of Sabal, a suspect in the number of bomb attacks here.

Auhtorities, Dangane said, attempted to serve the warrant for Sabal’s arrest but he resisted and engaged the arresting officers in a shootout.

Recovered from the crime scene were two .45 caliber pistols, three loaded magazines, a hand grenade and several components used in the making of improvised explosive devices, he said.
