A member of the notorious “Bolt Cutter Gang” was killed while his two companions were arrested during an encounter with operatives of the Eastern Police District (EPD) in a hot pursuit operation the other night in Muntinlupa City.
EPD director Chief Supt. Miguel Laurel identified the fatality through his driver’s license as Rodel Margallo dela Torre, 29, of Bigte, Norzagaray, Bulacan.
Dela Torre was declared dead on arrival at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) due to gunshot wounds in the body. His two cohorts, identified as Silvio Jariola, 40, of Buntong, Kamamanang, Cagayan de Oro, and Rodelio Santiago Lopez, 42, of Pier 2, Moriones, Tondo, Manila, were arrested.
An operation was conducted based on information about the whereabouts of the suspects.
According to Senior Supt. Mario Rariza, chief of the Pasig City police, the latest operation of the group was a foiled robbery incident last March 28 at 3:30 a.m. at Cubes, Internet Cafe on Pasig Boulevard, Bgy. Caniogan, Pasig City.
The suspects robbed the Internet shop by cutting the padlock with a bolt cutter but they were seen by a resident who quickly called the police.
PO3 Jake Salcedo said the suspects escaped in a green Nissan Vanette (UDM-934).
Rariza said elements of Follow-up Division and Intelligence Division led by SPO4 Raul Casino and SPO2 Ariel Galvelo conducted a operation based on information that the group was hiding in Moriones, Tondo.
He said operatives spotted the suspects on board their vehicle and tailed them. Sensing the presence of policemen, the suspects sped away.
The operatives chased them. In Bayanan, Muntinlupa City, one of the suspects fired at the policemen who promptly fired back, killing Dela Torre. His two companions were arrested. They yielded two .35 cal. revolvers, a .22 cal. revolver, live bullets and a bolt cutter.
The two were detained at the Pasig City Jail facing charges of assault upon a person in authority, violation of BP 881 and attempted robbery.
