CABANATUAN CITY, Philippines—An aspirant for barangay chair in this city was shot and wounded by a lone gunman in Barangay San Josef Sur on Wednesday.
Supt. Eliseo Cruz, city police chief, said Fernan Pangilinan, who is running for barangay captain of San Josef Sur, was talking to his nephew, Resty Santos, by a roadside at 8 a.m. when the gunman arrived and shot him.
Santos said the gunman, who was armed with a .45 cal. pistol and who was wearing a helmet, shot his uncle in the back as the latter ran to his vehicle parked on the other side of the road.
Santos said the assailant approached the fallen Pangilinan and shot him again four times.
The gunman fled on a motorcycle driven by another man.
Cruz said Pangilinan’s family suspected that the attack was related to rivalry in the barangay elections in October. He said policemen later arrested Joey San Gabriel, the supposed driver of the motorcycle used by the gunman.
