A police officer was killed while two others were wounded when they were shot several times by unidentified suspects in Bgy. Balagtas, Batangas City.

Case investigators identified the fatality as PO3 Willie de Torres Hernandez, 32, assigned with the city police, of Bgy. Balete. Wounded were Melvin Plata Talabis, 31, former PNP member, married, of Bgy. Mahabang Parang, and Rolando Caaway Mercado, 55, married, jobless, of Bgy. 20.

The suspects were identified as Crisostomo M. Listana, of Camagong, Alabat, Quezon, and two unidentified assailants who were able to escape.

At about 2:45 p.m. Sunday, Batangas City police received a phone call that a shooting incident was in progress in Bgy. Balagtas.

Upon receipt of the report, a team led by Supt. Nicolas Torre III and Insp. Julius Almeda responded to area and conducted an investigation.

At 2:40 p.m., Hernandez was driving his Toyota car, together with Talabis, and monitoring illegal drug activities in the area when the suspects suddenly appeared and shot him several times. He quickly returned fire, hitting Listana in the head.

Hernandez was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital by Dr. Virgilio Pascual, attending physician.

Talabis sustained gunshot wounds inthe body while Mercado was hit by stray bullets in his left thigh. They were still undergoing treatment in the hospital. 

Senior Insp. Herminia Llacuna and local policemen recovered at the scene a cal. .45 pistol, a magazine loaded with three live bullets, a magazine with eight ammunition for cal. .45, eight empty shells for cal. .45, two empty shells for Armalite rifle 5.56, two fired bullets and a Toyota Car owned by Hernandez.
