MANILA, Philippines – A re-electionist barangay chairman in Tondo, Manila survived an ambush try yesterday morning.
Vivano Navarra, 62, of Barangay 20, Zone 2, District 1, is recuperating from two gunshot wounds in the arm and body at the Mary Johnston Hospital, according to a report by Manila Police District officer-in-charge Chief Superintendent Roberto Rongavilla.
Navarra and a barangay tanod were inspecting a drainage project along Gate 10, Area B, Parola Compound in Tondo at around 7 a.m. when a man armed with a .38 caliber pistol fired two shots at him. After the shooting, the attacker boarded a motorcycle and sped away. The tanod and concerned citizens rushed Navarra to the hospital.
Rongavilla said police are eyeing two motives for the shooting: politics and the victim’s active participation in the police’s anti-crime campaign. The victim is running for re-election in the Oct. 25 barangay elections.
Rongavilla said Navarra personally assisted the police in their saturation drive the night before the attack. Police rounded up 50 persons and seized illegal drugs and illegal gambling machines. Nine of those arrested were found to have criminal records, ranging from dealing in illegal drugs to robbery and murder.
“The victim may have stepped into the illegal activities of some of the residents who could have exacted revenge following their arrest,” said MPD spokesman Chief Inspector Erwin Margarejo.
