Sitio Balinsungay in Barangay Mercedes has been known as the rice granary of Zamboanga City, but recently, the place has acquired a rather eerie reputation — the dumping site of “salvaged” persons.

This after several corpses were found in the sitio’s ricefields in the last two years.

The latest body was found last Saturday afternoon along the road leading to Sitio Gapuh, Talabaan.

The victim’s head was almost severed from the body due to long slash wound in the throat.

The circumstances surrounding the killing of the latest victim are similar to that of other bodies recovered at the said place in which the killers hogtied them and wrapped their faces with packing tape.

Aside from the slash wound in the throat, the victim sustained multiple injuries in the head and in the different parts of the body.

The corpse was recovered at the right portion of the road particularly in the canal locally called “parapeto”.

Like in similar incidents, no witnesses could tell to the police the identities of the perpetrators.

Investigators suspect the body was dumped at dawn after they killed him elsewhere.

Based on police records, several other “salvaged” persons were dumped in Sitio Balinsungay and in the neighboring barangay of Talabaan in the last two or three years.

Old folks in Balinsungay said the place has been known as the city’s rice granary and a peaceful place to live in since it was declared as sitio of Mercedes until elderly people have come up with its own fiesta with San Isidro Labrador as their patron saint.

Residents are asking the intervention of the city government to stop this practice by whoever the executioners of making Balinsungay their cadavers’ dumping ground.
