At least seven policemen delivering precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines in Catanduanes province in the Bicol Region were wounded in an ambush staged by communist rebels Tuesday.
Radio dzXL reported the seven policemen were in stable condition as of noon Tuesday, after the attack in San Andres town in Catanduanes.
Initial investigation showed the policemen were helping the Commission on Elections and poll contractor Smartmatic-TIM deliver PCOS machines when they were ambushed in Bislig village.
The attackers, who police claimed were New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, even tried to snatch 20 PCOS machines.
However, the attackers fled after the Army’s 3rd Infantry Battalion rushed to the site.
