DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur, Philippines – At least six persons were injured when a group of armed men – allegedly led by a village official – fired their weapons inside a village gymnasium in Kiblawan, Davao del Sur early Sunday, where a thanksgiving and victory ball for elected youth (Sangguniang Kabataan) and village (barangay) officials were being held.
Police Officer 3 Allan Dave Parantar, Kiblawan police investigator, said winning youth and village officials of Barangay Pasig and their supporters were partying when the suspects, identified as as Tata Lopez of the nearby Litus village, Julito Benlot and a certain Momo suddenly arrived, drew their firearms and indiscriminately fired at the merrymakers.
Parantar said the suspects immediately fled after the shooting.
Wounded were Pasig village councilor Benjamin Montejo, 46; Rolando Dayagdal, Cherry Mae Gallardo, Joey Alvior, Larry Salutan and Teofilo Arcaina.
Parantar said all the victims suffered gunshot wounds from still undetermined caliber of firearms.
They were initially rushed to the Gregorio Matas District Hospital, also in Kiblawan, but were later transferred to the Davao del Sur provincial hospital here.
Parantar said a manhunt has been launched against the suspects and investigators have been trying to determine the motive behind the shooting.
