Four members of the elite Special Action Force (SAF) of the Philippine National Police were killed while five others were wounded during an encounter with suspected communist rebels in Antipolo City, Rizal on Tuesday morning.
Director Leocardo Santiago, SAF commander, identified the slain policemen as Police Officers 1 Jesus Moral, Clifford Bacwaden, Johnald Tapitan, and Ramil Badungon – all members of the 34th Special Action Command of the 3rd SAF Batallion based in Baras, Rizal.
The wounded officers were Police Officers 1 Lito Babling, Indri Majaluddin, Ronnie Baroga, and Alvin Infanta, and PO2 Joey Mangawi.
A civilian, identified as Lourdes Dela Rosa, 39, was also hurt during the shootout.
The victims were immediately rushed to the PNP Hospital in Camp Crame, Quezon City.
According to Santiago, the SAF troopers were on their way to the unit’s headquarters in Taguig City on board their “defender truck” when they were tipped about the presence of armed men in Sitio Kaysakat, Barangay San Jose.
A land mine, believed to have been planted by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, suddenly exploded under the truck at around 6:00 a.m., instantly killing four policemen while their surviving colleagues engaged in a brief gunfight with the guerrillas.
“My men were not familiar with the area. They went there after residents sought their help when they saw several armed men,” Santiago told Inquirer.net.
Rizal police recovered fragments of the land mine and grenade around the ambush site. Authorities placed the number of attackers to be between 20 to 30.
Rizal Police director, Senior Superintendent Jonathan Miano, said tracks left by the NPA rebels suggest that they have been camping around the area since Monday waiting for their targets.
Meanwhile, Metro Manila’s Eastern Police District is keeping a close watch over hospitals near the ambush site in hope of capturing NPA rebels who may have been hurt during the firefight.
