MANILA, Philippines – Suspected Communist rebels on Wednesday afternoon ambushed a police car in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur province, injuring 4 policemen and a barangay official.
Injured were Chief Inspector Apollo Abao, chief of the Prosperidad Municipal Police Station, Police Officer 3 Leo Roderick Urbiztondo, Police Officer 2 Marcial Corvera Jr., Senior Police Officer 3 Mellardo Lumain and barangay treasurer Rosalie Rufon.
Abao said that they had just left Barangay Libertad when they were ambushed by at least 30 armed rebels around 1 p.m..
Superintendent Joseph Plaza, Agusan del Sur provincial police director, said Abao’s group tried to repel the rebels by firing back, but they were eventually overpowered.
Plaza said the rebels took the policemen’s firearms, including 4 M-16 rifles and a pistol, before escaping.
Pursuit operations have been launched by joint teams from the Special Action Force and Philippine Army against the rebels. — Report from Charmane Awitan, ABS-CBN Caraga
