DIGOS CITY, Davao del Sur, Philippines – An unidentified assailant shot dead a journalist here past 7 p.m. Saturday, the police said.
Nestor Bedolido, a writer for the weekly Kastigador, was buying cigarette at the corner of Rizal and Quezon avenues here when shot by a lone gunman.
Bedolido, who was in his late 40s, became the third journalist killed in the country this week.
On Wednesday, Joselito Agustin of dzJC Aksyon Radyo in Laoag City was shot and died while undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Mati City-based broadcaster Desidario Camangyan was also killed Monday night while hosting a singing contest in Manay, Davao Oriental.
Chief Inspector Anthony Padua told the Inquirer said Bedolido was hit six times in the body.
“The suspect casually walked into a waiting motorcycle driven by another unidentified man,” Padua said.
Padua said bystanders rushed the journalist to the nearby Gonzales Hospital but he died without receiving any treatment.
He said the police were still trying to investigate the motive and the identity of the suspect behind Bedolido’s killing.
The journalist was known to be critical of a prominent politician in Davao del Sur.
During the elections, he was suspected of authoring a series of exposés against the official.
