LEGAZPI CITY, Albay, Philippines—Three members of a family were killed by bursts of gunfire from unidentified armed men in a remote village in Daraga town in Albay at dawn Monday, the town police chief said.
Dead on the spot were Winefredo Lutino, 45, a village councilman, his wife Evelyn, and nephew Anjo Martos, 20—all residents of Purok Uno, Barangay (village) Nabasan in Daraga.
Jenny Lutino, 19, and daughter of Winefredo was hit by a bullet in her right arms.
Spared from the spraying spree of the gunmen were five other members of the family, who were also staying in the same house.
Chief Inspector Roque Bausa, quoting a report from village chief Edna Malto, said the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. Monday when the gunmen bearing assault rifles swooped down on the house of the Lutino family and fired at the family who were sleeping at the time.
Bausa said investigators were still probing a possible motive for the killings, which were apparently premeditated. They would not, however, discount the political angle as Winefredo is a village councilman.
Village chief Edna Malto, in a radio interview, said the victims have no known enemies in the village and have not even reported any death threats received by the family.
