MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) – Three supporters of a mayor seeking re-election were killed in an ambush in the northern Philippines on the eve of the country’s first automated election.
Jimmy Rivera, director of the Isabela Police, said the supporters were allegedly ambushed by supporters of a rival candidate at around 10 p.m. last night in Isabela province.
“There is no electricity in that coastal area of Palanan town and as they were walking on their way home, they were ambushed and it resulted in the death of three people,” Rivera said.
The three fatalities are supporters of incumbent Palanan Mayor Angelo Bernardo who is seeking reelection today.
The perpetrators are allegedly supporters of Salazar, former mayor of Palanan.
