ZAMBOANGA CITY – (UPDATE) Three persons were killed and eight others were wounded following a clash between policemen and followers of a mayoralty candidate in Zamboanga Sibugay a few hours before voting began Monday, the police said.

Senior Superintendent Federico Castro, Zamboanga Sibugay police chief, said the followers of R.T. Lim Lakas mayoralty bet Rogelio Gomez ignored a police checkpoint around 2 a.m.

He said members of the police’s special action force chased Gomez’s followers but instead of stopping, they fired upon the lawmen.
