Police gunned down three suspected car thieves during a shootout at the underpass of Mindanao Avenue in Quezon City early yesterday morning.

QCPD director Chief Sup. Richard Albano said the unidentified suspects were killed on the spot by members of Anti-Carnapping Section at around 2 a.m. at the underpass of Mindanao Avenue Ext., Bgy. Talipapa.

Police investigators said that prior to the incident, a taxi driver identified as Francisco Diaz, 63, went to Talipapa Police Station (PS-3) and reported that he was robbed by three men.

Diaz said he was driving his taxi cab, a K-10 Transport (UVF 586), along Congressional Avenue when he was flagged down by man and asked him to be brought to Sinag Tala St., Bgy. Bahay Toro.

However, upon reaching the dimly-lit portion of Sinag Tala St., the suspect ordered him to stop, announced a holdup and at gunpoint carted away his earnings amounting to P3,800.

Suddenly, two more men boarded the cab. They then blindfolded and hogtied him before they dumped him along Sinagtala St.

The suspects fled in his taxi.

Diaz said he was able to remove his blindfold and asked for help from a fellow taxi driver who took him to Police Station 3.

Elements of ANCAR who were patrolling along Mindanao Avenue sighted the stolen cab and chased it. They tried to flag it down but the driver instead sped away and fired at the pursuing lawmen who were prompted to retaliate, triggering a firefight that left the three suspects dead.

Recovered from the slain suspects were two cal. .38 revolvers and a fragmentation grenade.

Diaz positively identified the suspects.
