MANILA, Philippines – Burglars struck thrice in Mandaluyong City and broke into a public school and two houses over the weekend.
The case prompted authorities to increase police visibility and tap their “police multipliers,” such as the watchmen and volunteers in the barangay (villages), Senior Supt. Carlos De Sagun, Mandaluyong police told the Philippine Daily Inquirer by phone.
On Saturday night, a lawyer lost around P100,000 worth of cash and personal belongings to thieves who barged into his apartment while he was attending a wedding.
According to a police report, lawyer Gailord Fidel, 32, discovered the burglary around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday.
He found the front door to his apartment in Barangay Mauway partially opened and his house in total disarray.
The missing items were cash, designer watches, a Digital SLR camera, and assorted jewelry.
His female neighbor said she saw a man wearing a black bull cap standing in front of his apartment around 2 p.m.
On the same day, in another part of the city, thieves gained entry into the Mandaluyong High School in Barangay Nuevo de Pebrero and took away the personal belongings of teachers holding office at the school’s Science and Math faculty rooms.
A student discovered the break-in around 8 a.m. on Saturday and immediately alerted the security guard on duty.
On early Sunday, meanwhile, village watchmen spotted two men walking away from the house of Domingo Cabildo on Tabayog St., Barangay Malamig, and carrying Cabildo’s stereo component.
The suspects Eduardo Escarpe, 20 and Redentor Javier, 18 were arrested and turned over to the Mandaluyong police.
De Sagun called on the public to be more vigilant against robberies during the Christmas holidays.
“Robbers take advantage of Christmas when a lot of people are staying in the provinces on weekends and during the holidays. Residents can always ask the barangay police to watch over their houses when they are away,” De Sagun said.
