TWO POLICEMEN in a sports utility vehicle were ambushed by men armed with high-powered guns on Tandang Sora corner Congressional Road in Quezon City Thursday afternoon, a city police official said.
Chief Insp. Benjamin Elenzano, head of the Quezon City Police District’s homicide section, identified the victims as Police Officers 1 Juanito de la Cruz and Joselito Capulong, both assigned with the Police Regional Office 2 in Tarlac province.
They were formerly with the National Capital Region Police Office but were reassigned effective Aug. 1.
“I don’t know what they were doing here,” Elenzano told the Inquirer on the phone.
Based on witnesses’ accounts, an L-300 van (ZAL 329) struck the back of De la Cruz’s Toyota Fortuner at around 4:30 p.m. Several armed men alighted from the van and shouted at the victims to alight from the SUV.
When the victims remained inside the vehicle, the armed men sprayed the Fortuner with bullets, killing the policemen on the spot.
Asked if he is aware of any pending case against the two policemen, or if the policemen had any known enemies, Elenzano said they were still investigating possible motives behind the ambush. With Julie M. Aurelio
