TWO top leaders of the New People’s Army were killed in an exchange of gunfire with the government forces yesterday in Sorsogon after they allegedly tried to ambush a military convoy carrying  relief goods for the “Yolanda” victims.

Col. Joselito Kakilala, commander of the Philippine Army’s 903rd Infantry Brigade, said the gunfight occurred around 5:25 a.m. in Bgy. Balocawe, Matnog town.

The military convoy composed of the  Philippine Army’s 31st Infantry Battalion, 96th Military Intelligence Company and 22nd Infantry Battalion were carrying relief goods on their way to a humanitarian mission in areas hit  by super typhoon “Yolanda” in Tacloban City when they were ambushed by the rebels.

The relief goods were escorted by the military  on the way to Matnog port in Sorsogon where  they would  be loaded on a barge going to Leyte and Samar when upon reaching the barangay, they were waylaid by the rebels.

The 30-minute exchange of gunfire resulted in the death of two NPA leaders identified only as “Ka Abel” and “Ka Win,” both operating in Sorsogon.

An NPA commander, Jesus Guelas alias “Gapa Insoy,” was wounded during the encounter.

Recovered from the encounter site were three M16 rifles, one baby armalite, one M14 rifle, one Cal. .45 pistol and several explosives.
