GUNMEN attacked in the city on two separate occasions, less than a day after Monday’s ambush in Carmen here.

Yesterday’s attack saw Severino Gida dead. He was shot while he was riding a XRM motorcycle in Upper Carmen, not far from where Avaise Sombreo was killed in an ambush believed to have been staged against public works assistant regional director Mauro Bravo.

Police said Gida was a passenger of habal-habal driver Walter Jay Pagara. They were on their way to a gasoline station when two unidentified men, also on a motorcycle, fired shots from behind.

Pagara was rushed to the JR Borja Memorial Hospital in Carmen due to gunshot wounds. Police said the suspects were robbers.

The victims were reportedly told to stop and step down but the victim refused.

According to some witnesses, a gunman immediately fired shots at the victims at close range and then took the motorcycle.

Pagara, 19, of Upper Carmen sustained three gunshot wounds in the neck, buttocks and leg. Gida died from a gunshot wound in the head, left armpit and left leg.

Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (Cidu) head Chief Insp. Reyes said the local police needed to go on patrol in crime-prone areas.

On Monday evening, Jomer Ilustresimo of Barangay Bugo was gunned dead in Purok 3, Puerto.

Police recovered from Ilustresimo’s possession two sachets of a white crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu.

According to Puerto police chief Senior Insp. Norberto Zafra, Ilustresimo’s death could be drug-related.

Zafra said Ilustresimo was killed by at least four assailants, all armed.

Cagayan de Oro City Police Office director Senior Supt. Benedicto Lopez downplayed the series of shootings. He said the gun attacks were “not alarming” and were “isolated cases”. He also said the police was still in control of the situation.

Lopez however admitted that the police would need the help of citizens. He said police visibility would be increased.

“Sana tulungan ng mga mamamayan ang ating mga pulis,” Lopez told The Gold Star Daily.
