ANGELES CITY—Police have activated a task force to look into the murders of two foreigners here this week.

In July, police arrested a 28-year-old computer technician after he was linked to several murders that included three foreigners, among them a retired US serviceman and his wife.

But another retired American serviceman was killed at the parking lot of a public market in Barangay Lourdes Northwest here on Sept. 19.

James Basham, 63, was astride his motorcycle after buying vegetables at around 7:10 a.m. when he was shot by motorcycle-riding men.

The Angeles City police formed Task Force Basham to address the new case.

Two days later, on Sept. 21, Bruce Anthony Jones, 50, a British national, was killed in an ambush by two men on a motorcycle.

Jones was the captain of the ship that yielded P5 million worth of Indonesian-made smuggled firearms at the Port of Mariveles in Bataan last year.

He was arrested by police in Barreto village in Olongapo City only in July for smuggling but was freed after posting bail.

Jones and his wife Maricel, 25, were on their way to a firing range in Don Bonifacio Subdivision in Barangay Pulung Maragul here when they were attacked, police said.

Jones died instantly from bullet wounds while his wife was in serious condition at the Angeles University Foundation Medical Center.

Quoting Jones’ wife and friends, police investigators said the Briton had been receiving death threats since 2009. They said unidentified men had been casing the victims’ house in New Cabalan village in Olongapo City and had been tailing Jones.

Police said they have no information that ties the latest murders to a string of killings in July that had victimized six Filipinos and three foreigners.

The nine victims were killed when a man broke into their homes in what appeared to be robberies. The suspect, Mark Dizon, was arrested by the police in San Fernando City in La Union on July 27. Jun Malig, Inquirer Central Luzon
