THE two members of the Civilian Active Auxiliary (CAA), who were killed in an attack by the New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Casoon in Monkayo, Compostela Valley on Wednesday, were off-duty when the incident happened.

Contrary to the previous report that they were killed during the attack on 72nd Infantry Battalion (IB) detachment, CAAs Romeo Comamao and Resalio Quilario were gunned down while watching a singing contest in Sitio Cabangkalan in the said barangay.

First Lieutenant Ernesto Carolina, of the 25th Infantry Battalion (25th IB), said: “We were actually on the way to the area because we knew members of the Pulang Bagani Command-4 were there and were up to something. It happened right after mission briefing and the troops were about to move out when the NPA made their move. The NPA fired upon the detachment while CAA Comamao and CAA Quilario were shot.”

He said the communist rebels opened fire on the detachment as diversionary tactic while they attacked the CAAs.

Comamao was killed on the spot while Quilario died before reaching the Davao Regional Hospital in Tagum City.

Carolina also said they are still investigating the motive of the communist rebels but they are already suspecting that the slain CAAs have unsettled grudge with the NPA.

Lt. Col. Cesar Molina, chief of the Army’s 25th IB, in an e-mailed statement, said, “They were both unarmed and were just enjoying the festivities. This incident was really timed during this social gathering in order to sow maximum fear among the people. The CAAs were defenseless and were in the middle of a civilian crowd.”

Molina added, “The incident shows that the NPA are unmindful about the safety of civilians, and clearly demonstrates the organization’s terroristic nature and its utter disregard for human rights.”
